2) A second method of constructing plique-a-jour is FILIGREE in which a vessel or panel is made from (generally Sterling silver) wires in the traditional eutectic-soldered filigree method.
In this method also, enamel is inlaid in the holes suspended in an organic binder, and remains there due to capillary action. Practised still by several workshops in Russia, and by only a couple of enamellers in the West (Valeri Timofeev and his star pupil Diane Almeyda being about it to my knowledge) filigree plique-a-jour is extremely time-consuming and demanding. Picture opposite shows one of Diane Almeyda's wonderful filigree plique-a-jour bowls, "Amethyst, Pearls" |
