The Nude as depicted by contemporary painter-enamellers is often abstracted. This appears not to be a constraint imposed by the technique, as would be the case if the same subject were to be rendered in cloisonne, champleve or plique-a-jour. It just seems to be the way things are. Nuria Lopez Ribalta's lovely naturalistic nudes, often in collage with audio media are one exception. Bridget Dignan's withdrawn, representational pieces are another. The master Andreu Vilasis imbues his nudes with a rich erotic velvety mystique impossible to achieve in a conventional painting whilst Hugo Osterman's quirky otherworldly compositions offer a uniquely different view of the same subject matter. Where do these ideas come from? Moscow-born Yury Zhuravlyov has a different, apparently more spontaneous approach, whilst Merrylee Rae's mermaids evoke the shades of Art Nouveau. The article has grown like Topsy since I started it; originally it was to be about 8 pages but has monstered out to 28 - but I guess you just can't have too many nudes, can you? |
