An enamelled gold verge watch


Swiss, signed J. Baptiste LeRoy, Paris, c. 1780, 43.5 mm diam.

A fine example of the decorative watch produced in Geneva and sold throughout Europe during the 18th century.

Jean-Baptiste Le Roy (1719-1800) was the son of Julien and the brother of Pierre, both eminent horologists. In 1760 he invented a reversed fusee which was used by his brother and father. He was given apartments in the Louvre with his brother.

Named to the French Royal Academy in 1751, he became keeper of Louis XVI Cabinet de Physique in 1774.



Dr. Snellenburg has participated as an appraiser in the PBS television series "The Antiques Roadshow" since its first season. He is also a member of the Vetting Committees for the Winter Antique Show and the International Fine Art and Antique Dealers Show held each year at the 7th Regiment Armory, New York City.
