"Melting Point" is the third Australian Enamel Symposium, bringing together enamellists from around Australia and the world for 2 days of technical information, hands-on displays and social interaction.

The symposium is being held in Old Town Hall in Melbourne, Victoria, in the heart of Melbourne and easily accessible by train, tram and bus. Lunch will be provided both days.

The program will include a keynote address by Bill Helwig, process consultant for Thompson's Enamels who has over 25 years experience in lecturing and workshops; slide shows by a variety of artists, showing their current work and workshops and "hands-on" displays of techniques and products. Also included in the program will be a round-table discussion on the promotion of enamels, "show and tell", and a pin swap

Before and after the symposium will be a series of workshops featuring Bill Helwig, Debbie Sheezel & Carolyn Delzoppo both internationally-known Australian enamellers), and Anna-Margot Collins, jeweller.

Our feature exhibition will be held in Melbourne, with a follow-up exhibition in Brisbane. The feature exhibition opens on September 13th at the Gray and Reed Gallery, Melbourne, and will run for 2 weeks

The follow-up exhibition will be held at Brilliant Facets, Brisbane, opening October 18th. The exhibition is entitled "Melting Point", is open to all enamellists, and will, we hope, stretch your imagination.

Workshop Information

Bill Helwig will be conducting a 4 day workshop called FOOTPRINTS. "Be prepared to allow yourself to experience the magic that glass has to offer and leave what you know at home. Participants will use 80 mesh transparent enamel, opaque liquid white enamel, extended firing time, and their ability to let go of the "paint on paper" attitude. Primarily the workshop is about the nature of glass."

Bill has been running workshops and lectures for over 25 years throughout the US, Canada and England and has participated in over 220 exhibitions including the first Objects USA. He is an author, curator, juror and has been a conference chair for the Enamellist Society in the USA. His work is part of numerous collections.

Carolyn Delzoppo will be conducting a 4 day workshop on Cloisonné and Champleve enamelling, during which participants will receive tuition in all stages of cloisonné enamelling on fine silver, including design with line and colour, preparation of metal, preparation and wet-laying of enamel, firing and finishing techniques.

The workshop is suited to both the beginner and experienced enameller. Those with jewellery soldering skills will also have the opportunity to learn the champleve technique.

Carolyn is an internationally renowned specialist in the technique of cloisonné enamel and has received many awards for her work both in Australia and internationally. She regularly exhibits her cloisonné miniatures and jewellery and her work is represented in many public and private collections.

She has been invited to conduct workshops for the US Enamellist Society, the German Guild and in the Soviet Union as well as teaching in Australia.

Anna-Margot Collins will be conducting a 1 day workshop on setting for enamels which will cover the simple techniques of stone setting and their application in setting enamels. Participants will make a bezel setting and simple claw setting for holding an enamel piece as well as going through the basics of simple stone setting in claw and rubover style settings.

Anna-Margot has been a jeweller for over 25 years and has owned and operated her own business for the past 17 years.

Debbie Sheezel will be conducting a 3 day workshop on the use of foils for an added dimension to your enamel work. This is a workshop about experimentation and layering of fine silver foils to enhance your work. Use them as an intrinsic part of design formation or with spontaneity - the illusion and depth is exciting, Incorporate them with other enamel materials for added drama. Working on hollow-ware, e.g. bowls, this workshop is open to all skill levels.

Debbie started out as a painter at the College of the Arts, previously known as the National Gallery School of Victoria, but it took a while for her to find a material with which she could work and feel passionate about. She has worked in many areas of enamel work, from the very large murals and bowls to small jewellery pieces and had many corporate and private commissions. Most notable among these is the mural for the Brisbane International Airport in the arrivals hall - "Daintree" - which is over 16 x 3 meters.
