RUTH BALL - "Detail of triangular enamel technique demonstration tiles"
Left to Right: cloisonné; champlevé; painted enamel.

Some months ago we received 3 emailed images for display in the eNAMEL Online Gallery. Each was different - all were interesting but the image above - "Iris Tiles, 2001" - was particularly intriguing. What was its genesis? Was there perhaps a small article on technique here?

We contacted Ruth, who explained that the tiles were part of a "How To" series commissioned by NMGM ( National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, UK) and promised to send some pictures and text detailing the project in time for the September 2002 issue. At the agreed-upon time a veritable cornucopia of excellent pictures with their accompanying text appeared in my email box. The amount of detail was astonishing! No small article here - this was a whole issue - illustrated descriptions of the three main enamel techniques - painting, cloisonné and champlevé - all the necessary preparatory information.

Finally, my procrastination had borne fruit - someone else had done all the work! Here was everything the rank beginner needed to know in order to make cloisonné, champlevé and painted enamel pieces and we owe Ruth Ball a big vote of thanks for producing it!
