The subtly-detailed backgrounds in Podgoretz' work aren't always obvious at first sight. One is struck initially by the delicacy of the foreground - the superbly rendered diaphanous fabrics overlying the warm, vibrant body and limbs - simply stunning !
Then on further investigation the mysterious foliated depths that serve to anchor the figure in the landscape become apparent.
If the marvellous Limoge-style enamelling was all there was to the works it would be enough, but there's so much more! The pieces are presented in masterfully designed and wrought gold frames. Proportion, balance and relevance are so integral to these sinuous metallic extensions of the picture that it's difficult to envision any other way of presenting the works.
