West Dean College Visual art & Craft Summer School West Dean Chichester West Sussex PO18 0QZ Copper Enamelling at West Dean Summer School "The six day Summer School Course 'Enamelling - Art and Craft', is appropriate for both beginners and advanced enamellers. The main aim of the course is to explore the potential of enamel when fired on to copper. For beginners a range of basic techniques is presented during the first two days. After that they are free to take their own direction. Advanced enamellers meet before the course begins to discuss which projects they wish to follow, pursuing their own ideas or working from samples which display advanced techniques, particularly high firing on small panels and on copper bowls. The studio at West Dean has six kilns, for a maximum class size of ten people. Two kilns can easily fire panels up to 20 cm square. Nearly 100 enamels are available for students who pay only for the amount they use. A large variety of bowl shapes and copper panels can also be purchased, although students may bring their own supplies if they wish. West Dean provides accommodation in a beautiful building that was formerly a stately home. The food is excellent. During the summer school talks by the tutors take place during the first two evenings and other entertainments are planned during the rest of the six days. Eight courses on various subjects are run during each of the three weeks of the summer school and an exhibition of all the students' work is held on the last day." Pat Johnson |
